Driver's Safety Course

If you meet the eligibility requirements, the State of Texas will allow you to request dismissal of a moving traffic charge upon completion of a driver’s safety course once every twelve months.

 Persons NOT ELIGIBLE to request dismissal by taking the safety course include those persons who have completed a driver’s safety course within the last 12 months preceding the date of current offense, persons who hold a Commercial Driver’s License, persons who have been charged with any offense in a construction zone with workers present.  Charges other than moving traffic violations are not eligible.  Charges of speeding 25mph and above the posted speed limit.

 

To be eligible to request a Driver’s Safety Course, also known as defensive driving,

1.      you must be at least 17 years of age at the time of the offense,

2.      hold a valid Class C Texas Driver’s License

3.      have proof of financial responsibility, also known as liability insurance,

4.      have not completed a driver’s safety course within the last 12 month preceding the date of the current
         offense and

5.      you have been charged with a moving traffic offense

If you are eligible, you may make you request by mail or in person.  To send your request by mail:

1.      you may use the Reply Form given to you by the officer or go to Forms

2.      a letter stating that you are pleading guilty or no contest to the alleged charge and that you have not taken a driver’s safety course within the last 12 months to dismiss a ticket

3.      a copy of your proof of financial responsibility(insurance proof)

4.      a cashier check or money order made payable to Freestone County for $144.00

Your request MUST be received by the Court by the appearance date at the bottom of your ticket.  You will be sent a receipt, your due date to have course completed, and a form for you to complete to request your driving record from the State. Go to Forms

You will be given 90 days to complete a driver’s safety course approved by the Texas Education Agency.
NO EXTENSIONS WILL BE GRANTED.
